Nosgoth: New classes, Vanguard and Summoner, are out now!

Nosgoth is a fast-paced, free-to-play MMO action/FPS game that allows you to play both sides of the war between vampires and humans. It is currently in its open beta phase. You can check out our review of the game here.

Excitingly, it recently has just rolled out 2 new classes: The vanguard for humans and the summoner for the vampires. We'll explore these 2 classes briefly in this article!

Human

The vanguard acts as a tank for the human team and is great at close-quarter combat with a vampire (due to the huge-ass shield he is wielding). This is an important role for humans since humans are rather flimsy as compared to vampires... logically so, I might say. The shield will be able to block quite a number of vampire attack skills, such as reaver's pounce and can block off any frontal melee attacks. With shield bash, they could even disorient nearby enemies long enough for them to deal the killing blow. If the enemy in question is a bit further, they can employ their shield charge to charge a short distance forward before using their bash effect on the enemy. This is a great skill the push a reaver off its prey and save your teammate's life!

Not to mention, this class also has a ranged skill - they are able to throw their axes at their enemies. There are 4 different types of axes that vanguards can throw. The first and most iconic axe is the Kama. Vanguards will be able to throw the Kama at vampires, who are at a short distance away in rapid succession, allowing multiple take-downs within a very short period of time. They will be able to throw war axes as well, however, since these axes are much heavier than the lightweight Kama, you will not be able to throw it as quickly. War axes will deal much more damage than Kama though.

Throwing splitter hatchets is one of vanguard's frontal AoE damage skill. The hatchets can be thrown as fast as the Kama, but they deal way less damage and accuracy than the Kama. Another axe that vanguards can throw is the barbed Impaler axe. Whenever the axe hits its target, the vampire will suffer from additional bleeding damage over time.

These are just the class's primary skill... we haven't covered his secondary ability yet! Vanguards will be able to use a buff skill called a Rallying Cry, which will increase the defensive stats of nearby teammates for a short time. When used at a crucial time, this skill may mean the survival or the death of your teammates!

Vampire

Now, let us take a look at the new character class, the summoner, for the vampire team! The primary ability of the summoner includes her ability to call on ghouls from the underworld to aid her in battle. There are 2 sort of ghouls she can summon - the first being the stalkers (lesser ghouls) and the second being the slayer. Stalkers are weaker in health and damage but can be effectively used as a way to distract an enemy (they will automatically seek out the nearest target) as you make a quick getaway. Summoners will be able to summon 2 stalkers at a time. Slayers, on the other hand, are much more powerful and durable. They will relentlessly attack the targeted enemy, making them an effective tool to use against a fleeing and weakened human. Summoners will be able to summon 1 slayer at a time.

Besides summoning, the summoner also dabbles in dark magic and this afforded her with special dark magic-based attacks, such as the abyss bolt and hell strike. The abyss bolt works, somewhat like a timed grenade. As a summoner, you'll cast it (shorter distance) or throw it (longer distance) at your enemies. The sphere casted will then rapidly expand and explode once it reaches its maximum size.

On the contrary, hell strike is not an instant cast spell and it works a bit like the arcane missiles in World of Warcraft (WoW)...if you replaced the channeling time with a cast time instead. Hell strike damages the enemy with multiple streams of hellish flames and is much harder to dodge than the abyss bolt (if you play MMOFPS games often, I'm pretty sure you've dodged plenty of grenades in your day!). However, due to its cast time (it's not very long, but still... every seconds count!), the summoner will be extremely vulnerable during casting as, obviously, she will be rooted to the spot.

The last of the summoner's slew of cool skills is her abyssal barrier. With it, she will be able to repel any incoming frontal projectiles. However, bear in mind that this barrier is only good for projectiles... unlike vanguard's shield and the enemy can just walk right through the barrier if they within close range and then proceed to shoot you. Not to mention, the barrier won't even hold up against a vanguard's shield charge, that's for sure. However, this barrier is extremely useful for covering your team's retreat or advance, particularly when the enemy team is still quite some distance away.
